About ABACUS

A Brief History

The company was established as a local brokerage in June 1946 by its founder, Alan Blunden. In January 2000, the firm became limited. Barry Brook and Nick Blunden became directors of the new limited general insurance firm, Alan Blunden & Company Limited, and continued to build on the scheme side of the business that they had started in 1997. This was re-branded as ABACUS (ABACUS stands for “Alan Blunden And Company Underwriting Schemes” and, being an acronym, should always appear in capital letters), and sold niche property insurance products through a network of insurance brokers who were introduced by our marketing partners at the time, Gibbs Hartley Cooper.


From this point, ABACUS has grown into a market leader for the sale of residential let and vacant property insurance. ABACUS is a ‘wholesaler’; we develop products with insurers and handle all the administration, vetting of insurance agencies, collection of premiums, reporting, online distribution and relationship handling. We build our own web platforms and use OpenGI as our back office.


Richard Burgess is a Group Director and the CEO and remains primarily responsible for the sales & marketing of ABACUS, Health & Safety and Compliance.

Our aim is to build long term relationships with our broking partners and clients. We achieve this by offering quality products which offer exceptional cover at competitive prices.

Meet the Team

Jasmine Goodger
Marketing Executive
Jasmine has been working at the company for just over 2 years. In her role as the marketing executive, she assists Robin Gentle with company promotion, event planning and agency enquiries. She also facilitates the operation of all company social media accounts and mailers, as well as writing content, creating media for the company and running the companies internal marketing campaigns.
Nick Dawson
Claims Team Manager
Nick Dawson’s work at ABACUS as the Claim’s Team Manager involves assisting brokers in the event that any issues occur throughout the lifespan of a claim. Nick and his team log all claims that are reported to insurers and make sure that their records fall in line with insurers so that the correct terms are applied to policies when renewable if applicable.
Rachel Burton
NBT Assistant Manager
Rachel has been working at ABACUS for 8 years. She has just taken on the role of the New Business Team’s Assistant Manager and is now heading up a division of the team that looks after portfolios specifically.
Nicola Foxwell
Accounts Manager
Nicola has been working for the company for 18 years in the Accounts Department. As the Accounts Manager, she oversees the day to day running of the Accounts Department and ensures the correct accounting methods and practices are adhered to and that the deadlines are met. She monitors and analyses the accounting data to produce the required monthly and annual reports.
Laura Wisken
EBT Assistant Manager
Laura has been working at ABACUS for 18 years and has just recently taken up her new role as the Assistant Manager of our Existing Business Team. In this new role she supports Jamie, the team Manager, in the day to day running of the team, acts as a referral point for other members of staff and for more complex queries, and continues to use her wealth of experience to process all varieties of midterm adjustments and renewals
Jamie Mayo
EBT Manager
Jamie has worked at ABACUS since 2015, starting in the claims team and has been in his role as the EBT Manager since 2021. He manages a team of 12. As the EBT manager he is involved in the day to day organisation of renewals and midterm adjustments, as well overseeing the development of the existing business team which allows brokers to continue to receive the great service ABACUS provides.
Sally Golding
ABACUS Oversight
Sally has been working at ABACUS for 19 years. Her role as the ABACUS oversight is key in the day-to-day running of the EBT teams processes.
Adm Rogers
NBT Manager
Adm started working for ABACUS as a Temporary employee on February 1st, 2002, and went full time 1st June the same year. He is currently the New Business manager, and his role is to guide, develop and mentor the team as well as coordinate the day to day running of the team and assign work.
Richard Burgess
CEO
In 2005, Richard Burgess joined the firm as a director. Richard is now the CEO of the company.
Jecelda Allen
Business Development Co-ordinator
Jecelda has been working at the company for 14 years and has been in this specific role since 2016. Her work as the Business Development Co-ordinator involves assisting with the administrative running of the team and monitoring the administrative systems with the department including registration of new brokers, cancellation of agencies, dealing with broker changes, acquisitions/transfer of agency and much more.
Robin Gentle
Head of Agency and Marketing
Robin has been working at ABACUS for 17 years. As the Head of Agency and Marketing team it is Robin’s responsibility to oversee all Agency related work, he also travels across the country visiting brokers to keep in touch and offer face-to-face contact which is an important part of maintaining broker relationships. He is also in charge of marketing and is involved in organising the company’s involvement in events and exhibitions.
